What Causes Multiple Sclerosis

The exact cause of Multiple Sclerosis is unknown. Most researchers believe it is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body’s myelin causing a disruption in nerve transmission. The exact antigen or target of this attack is not known.

Tlymphocytes, together with macrophages, misguidedly attack the body’s own myelin. Tlymphocytes produce cytokines which signal the rest of the immune system to become involved in this autoimmune attack.

Although a specific trigger for this autoimmune attack has not been identified, most researchers agree that several factors are involved including:

1) Environmental
2) Viral
3) Genetic

A consensus among neurologists is that Multiple Sclerosis occurs in response to an environmental factor which acts as a trigger for an autoimmune response to myelin in genetically susceptible individuals.
